“The people of Nineveh fasted; The people of Nineveh fasted for three days. The city (Nineveh) is located on the banks of the Tigris River, and its founder is Nimrod (Genesis 10:11-12).

The ancient city of Nineveh is the origin of Assyria. Very spacious and beautiful. Its length was 12 kilometers. King Sennacherib had built many buildings in the city (Jonah 4:11).

The people of Nineveh at that time had so many sins that God was about to destroy them. Jonah, whose name means “dove”, was a prophet in the reign of Jeroboam II, whose goodness and mercy never ends. God sent the prophet Jonah to the people of Nineveh to bring them back and repent (Luke 11:30).

This prophet’s residence was in the border town of Gathefer in Galilee. His father’s name is my father-in-law. At that time, the prophet Jonah prophesied that Jeroboam would drive out the Syrians and restore the borders of Israel (2 Kings 14:25; Jonah 1:1).

The history of the church explains that the child of Sarepta’s widow who was resurrected by Prophet Elijah became Prophet Jonah (1 Kings 17:19). Our Savior Christ also told us that Jonah’s coming out of the belly of a fish was an example of his own resurrection (Matthew 12:19-42; Luke 11:30-32).

When God said, “Go and preach in Nineveh,” the prophet Jonah said, “You are merciful; If I tell them that they are going to perish, I will be called a false prophet.” He left Israel and fled to Tarsus. And God raised up a great wind and caused the ship to be buffeted by waves. When the merchants who were on board the ship with Jonah started throwing their wealth into the sea, the Prophet Jonah realized his mistake and pleaded with them, “Throw me into the sea, not your property, because the storm came because of me.” They said, “Because of this man, we will not lose his life, and innocent blood will not be shed on us.”

When they cast lots to throw him into the sea, the lot fell on Jonah, so the merchants threw Jonah into the sea. Anbari, a great fish commanded by God, received Jonah in its mouth and carried him for three days and three nights to Nineveh. God gave the example of a skull plant when Jonah was sad because its leaves had dried up, saying, “When you mourn for a skull that grew like a mule in one day because you didn’t work hard, behold, more than one hundred and twenty thousand people and animals in the great city of Nineveh grieve for me because they are the creatures of my hands.” .

When Jonah found out that Nineveh had reached the ground, he realized that he could not run away from God. He began to preach to the people of Nineveh saying, “Repent.” When the people of Nineveh repented, God forgave them and saved them from destruction. Not to be false, the fire was seen from above as a cloud. He dried the leaves of the big tree until they withered and showed them to the people. He explained to them that their repentance was not in vain (Prophecy of Jonah). The part of the Book of Sanksar, which will be read on December 5th, tells us that about a whole country of people who did not repent were lost in the fire.

The Nineveh fast is a three-day Sabbath. Just as the people of Nineveh who repented through three days of fasting and prayer were saved from destruction, in the Old Testament Esther fasted for three days and prayed for the return of the plague that had come upon Israel (Is. 4:15-16). When Our Lady, the Holy Virgin Mary, returned from the holiday, her infant son Jesus Christ was lost on the road and after three days of searching, she found him in the temple (Luke 2:46). Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in his answer to Herod, explained that three days is the end of the Sabbath (Luke 13:32).

The Nineveh fast is a fast to remember God’s goodness and mercy. In other words, instead of destroying the time of our sins, he finds a reason and saves us. Even though Jonah refused to preach, God in his special wisdom made him go. Indeed, God did not lack another prophet to send. But because he wanted to teach him as well.

The people of Nineveh are an example of the Israelites. This means that if a person confesses his sin and repents, God will not stop forgiving him. That’s why he said to Jonah, “When you mourn for a skull that grew like a mule in one day, behold, over one hundred and twenty thousand people and animals in the great city of Nineveh grieve for me because they are the creatures of my hands.”

It is not without reason that our early church fathers decided for us to fast this and other things. The law was prepared for us so that we, like the people of Nineveh, should fast and pray to be cleansed from our sins. Today, when our world is being shaken by the waves of sin, if we, like the people of Nineveh, turn from our sins and repent, our good creator, God, is forgiveness and mercy. I also forgive you,” he tells us.

Therefore, realizing the miracles performed on Prophet Jonah and the punishment for disobedience is not easy, we should obey God, the religious leaders and our parents, realizing the mercy that was revealed to the people of Nineveh. When we fast, God, our God, returns His mercy with mercy, His anger with patience, and sends His forgiveness to the world that was lost in sin. By fasting, apart from saving ourselves from famine and pestilence, our country, its plants and animals will also be saved from drought and pestilence due to our wrongdoing.

Dedicate it to God
